Celebrating Women - Past, Present, and Future
Women’s Stories Told In the First-Person
Putting a twist on Women’s History Month, Story Preservation Initiative challenges students to create an oral history of a woman who they admire. This project is all about preserving women’s stories by creating a permanent record.
Ask students - who are the women in your state, your town, city, neighborhood, or school who are making a difference? Is there an historical figure that a particular woman reminds you of and, if so, who and in what ways?
Oral histories are a snapshot in time, documenting the present and preserving it for the future. What better way to recognize WHM than to have students preserve the story of a remarkable woman now living? She can be of any age or background. What she does can be of significance to many or to few.
You’ll find students will learn in unexpected and highly personal ways, with the added bonus of being involved in a project that is both long lasting and meaningful.
How to Begin
Story Preservation has produced an Oral History Guide that walks students through the process step-by-step.
When students are tasked with researching their interviewee’s life and life circumstances, preparing talking points, comfortably operating recording equipment, understanding the ins and outs of interviewing, editing, sharing, and presenting what they have created, the learning that takes place is nothing short of huge and meaningful, and more often than not, unforgettable.
